I’ve been in China for over a year now, but the idea of dressing up as a plus size is nothing new.
So I’m not surprised to hear that the dress that went viral last year was inspired by a popular Chinese trend that involves dressing up like a character from the Disney movie “Beauty and the Beast.”
But the dress was far from the first one to be created with this theme, and this year it’s definitely the most successful.
The “Beautiful Beast” costume, which went viral online last year, was inspired and made popular by a local artist called Ching Shui, who’s also the creator of the “Plus Size Fashion” site and a popular plus size blog called MAMA.
Shui created the dress in China’s Xian Province, which is home to some of the countrys largest factories, including Shanghai’s infamous clothing giant L’Oreal, and the dress quickly went viral.
It received over 7 million views and received more than 500,000 likes on its Facebook page alone.

Shui said he wanted to create a “fancy dress” that would have the same look as the film’s heroine Belle.
The idea behind this idea was to give a girl an idea of what her perfect outfit might look like.
“The dress was created with a goal of giving the illusion of an everyday wardrobe.
We wanted to give the illusion that she’s dressed up as Belle, that she has a normal life,” Shui said.
The dress itself was inspired in part by an earlier trend in China called “Plus-Size Fashion.”
The trend has taken off in the last few years, as a number of designers have started to take advantage of the increased visibility of women with large bodies in fashion.
“When I was a little kid, I had to wear a little girl’s dress to school because it would have been too big,” said Shui.
“I started to think of this as a new trend that I wanted to bring to China.”
Shui says he didn’t set out to make a dress for Belle, and that the idea came from watching the Disney film.
“I had a lot of ideas about what my perfect wardrobe might look as Belle.
But the first dress I made was Belle’s, and it was a really long time before I could actually come up with an outfit that would fit her,” Shiu said.”
So I decided to do something more for my daughter.”
The dress, which Shui says “fits Belle perfectly,” has been viewed over 5 million times on his MAMA blog.
As for how the dress went from “beauty” to “fantastic,” Shuei says it was mostly down to luck.
“We were really lucky because of the Chinese population,” he said.
“They love Belle, so she’s very popular there.
I just had to get a few lucky breaks.
She was also a big fan of the Disney franchise, so we really had to work together to get the right dress for her.”
Shuang, who is a model, says the dress had a very positive impact on the local fashion scene.
“Beautiful Belle was always a girl’s dream and now she is the heroine of the film, so I really like the dress,” he told CNN.
“It’s nice to be a part of something that is inspiring.
It gives you hope and it gives you a good feeling to wear the dress.”Read More
