An Irish pub-girl costume is a fun way to dress as one of the pub’s most beloved characters, according to Irish pub chain Publix.
The outfit, which includes a short skirt and a hat, can be worn to pubs and clubs across the country, with many pubs and other establishments adopting the costume as a form of socialising.
The ‘Lady of the Glen’, the fictional pub’s Lady of the Glens, is a feisty character who likes to play fetch with her patrons and to have a good time with her friends.
Publix Ireland said the dress is popular among young people and people who enjoy fun and festive costumes, and has been a hit for the chain.
“We know it’s a popular costume, but we thought we’d put it to the test,” said Pat O’Connor, Publax Ireland’s marketing director.
“We have people who come in to our stores who have never even heard of Lady of The Glen before, and they’ve all loved it.”
The outfit is made from a mixture of cotton, wool and woolen, with the hat, skirt and cravat added in, and it can be made into anything from a small, button-up, to a full-on, embroidered outfit.
“It’s a bit of a fun costume, and I like to do it with friends,” said Ms O’Connors sister, Claire.
The publix website has instructions for how to create the dress.
Ms O’Connor said she would often have people come in and try it on with her, with some coming away with “a little bit of an impression”.
“It can be really fun and the people that have seen it so far have been really supportive,” she said.
“They’re all happy, they’re laughing and they’re having a good go.”
She said she had been told people could dress up with their mum or grandmother.
“I think it’s quite a simple way to do something that’s a little bit more fun for the kids,” she added.
Alicia McNeill, who works at the pub chain, said the idea for the costume had been around for years.
She said Lady of a Glen was an iconic character in the pub and was “always going to be a part of the menu”.
“People have always wanted to wear it, but it’s always been a bit tricky,” Ms McNeill said.
While she had not had the opportunity to create a full dress, she said she was planning on adding a little more colour to it in the future.
“In the end, it’s just a simple costume,” she explained.
