With a swimwear trend known as the swimsuit boom, many women are opting for a shorter-sleeved suit that offers a more relaxed fit.
But not everyone is embracing a swim dress as much as they once did, and some experts are warning women to be aware of the potential health risks.

The trend, which is in the midst of its biggest wave in a decade, started with the rise of swimsuits in the 1960s, said Michael Bierut, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
In the late 1970s, he said, the first women’s swimsuits had a short-sleeve design and many people wore them for the first time.
Today, swimsuits have evolved to be shorter and tighter, with longer sleeves.
But Bieruts said there are still risks to wearing swimsuits, especially in hot, crowded places.
“The risk of overheating is the same,” he said.
Bierut said many women’s swimming attire is a form of swimwear for a number of reasons, including comfort, style and flexibility. “
And the risk is even higher if you don’t wear a swim suit at all.”
Bierut said many women’s swimming attire is a form of swimwear for a number of reasons, including comfort, style and flexibility.
They may also be comfortable in a long-sizing suit, which provides better leg support and can be worn under a swim cap, he added.
Some brands, like Zara and Jil Sander, have also begun to sell swimwear in longer sleeves and with longer jackets and shorts.
“It’s a fashion trend, but the science is not there to say it’s safe,” said Dr. David Shih, chief medical officer at the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Shih said he and other experts are concerned about the trend’s health risks for women.
“A lot of the products that are being sold are not safe to wear,” Shih told CNN.
“We have to be really careful because there are a lot of products that have come out that are unsafe to wear.”
Shih said women’s long-waisted swimsuits can be a concern because they’re made from stretchy fabrics that can be stretched, and the longer they are, the more water that can build up in the garment.
“I have a feeling it’s going to become more common as we have this trend,” Shuh said.
He said the longer sleeves can make the swimwear more susceptible to water retention and infection.
“Women’s swimwear is still a fashion item,” he added, saying it’s important for women to make sure they wear swimwear that is safe for their bodies.
The American Academy for Pediatricians recommends that women wear long-fitting swimsuits and long-cuffed jackets, with long sleeves.
If you don, it’s recommended that you wear a long sleeved dress that is long enough to cover the bust and waist, which will help minimize the chance of dehydration, he advised.
Biersut said if you’re planning on going to a swim event, you should also wear a mask and long sleeve pants, which he recommends you do not wear with a swim costume.
Birthed in the swims’ past, the trend has spread to many parts of the world, and it’s now common for people to wear swimsuits even in the hottest parts of Miami, for example, he noted.
Shih noted that the popularity of long-coated swimsuits has grown as women have grown older and have less time to wear them.
Shuh said a lot is happening in the health care industry that can make swimming a more popular activity.
“We have a lot more information about how to get into a better swim suit,” he told CNN, adding that it’s a good time to look at what your body looks like under a suit.
“There’s definitely a lot we can learn from our bodies in order to make better swimsuits,” he explained.
Shipps also warned against wearing long-faded swimwear and told CNN that people shouldn’t wear them when they’re tired.
“If you are going to be out in the pool, or on a swimming course, or anywhere else, it is not safe for you to wear anything that looks like you are out of shape,” Shipps said.
He said people should not use the word “wearing” when they mean wearing something on.
“Wearing something is not the same as wearing it,” Ship said.
“As long as you wear it, you are good,” he continued.
“It doesn’t matter if you are wearing a long sleeve shirt, or a long coat, or shorts.”
