Posted November 12, 2019 04:15:47 It may have been a one-off but when a man was spotted wearing a dress similar to the one Queen Victoria wore to the coronation of Prince Albert, the internet was buzzing.
But what started as a trend has turned into a trend again, with a new version of the ‘cupcake’ royal dress on sale.
The new dress, created by fashion designer, designer and fashion icon, Catherine St John, has sparked a social media frenzy and it’s selling out fast.
The dress was created by Catherine St Johns design studio and has been worn by the Queen since the coronations of the late King George V and Princess Margaret.
It features a satin-lined, corseted bodice, an open back with wide waistband and a satiny satin waist.
The bodice is also topped with a lace-up back with a gold and silver crescent moon applique.
Catherine St John said the dress was inspired by a ‘lovely’ dress from a Victorian era, a dress worn by a woman called The Queen of Dresses.
“When I came up with the idea for the dress, it was a pretty obvious thing to do with the Queen of Hearts and the Duchess of Gloucester,” she said.
“We were inspired by an Elizabethan dress and thought that the crown could be made to look like a cupcake.”
The dress has been sold out for two weeks and has generated hundreds of comments and tweets.
“It’s like a bit of a dream come true,” Ms St John told News.
“I don’t think there’s any other outfit in this country where there’s such a demand for this dress.”
Catherine said the designer’s idea to make the dress look like the Queen’s coronation dress came from her own life.
“The coronation is always a bit different than other times and I’ve always had a pretty different approach to dress,” she told NewsCom.AU.
“For the coronavirus, I’d had a lot of different ideas of what to wear but there was always one idea that was just perfect for this time.”
“I’d always felt like a little bit of royalty.
And when I was at university, the coronadition dress was the one dress I wore the most, and I remember thinking it looked like the Duchess, so that was definitely my inspiration.”
Cats and dogs have also been spotted in the dress.
“Cats love the dress and dogs love the Queen,” Ms Sjogren said.
The Duchess of York was also spotted wearing the dress as part of the Queen and Prince Philip’s official visit to Australia.
Cats are also part of Catherine’s love of dressing.
“So many cats love the cupcake dress,” Ms Tapper said.
